What chimney inspection involves in North Olmsted is set by the housing stock here: 1950s–60s ranches, splits and Capes on shifting lake-plain clay, plus a wave of 70s and 80s family-room fireplaces — settling exterior stacks, short flues with draft problems, and masonry and factory-built systems on the same house.

North Olmsted filled in fast during the 1950s and 1960s, spreading north and south of Lorain Road across flat, heavy lake-plain clay, and the housing is mostly what that decade built: ranches, split-levels and Capes on generous lots, with later subdivisions added around Great Northern and out toward Columbia and Clague. It is a market with two distinct chimney questions, and most houses here have one or the other.

You cannot see the part of the chimney that matters most. From the ground a stack can look perfectly sound while the flue tiles inside are cracked, shifted, or missing their mortar joints entirely. A compromised flue is exactly how heat and combustion gases reach the wood framing that surrounds every masonry chimney, and there is no version of that story with a good ending. An inspection puts a camera up the full length of the flue and eyes on every accessible part of the system, and gives you the photographs rather than just a verdict.

What we find on North Olmsted chimneys that leads to chimney inspection

Two different systems on one house

It is routine here to find a 1957 masonry heating chimney on the original part of the house and a 1979 factory-built fireplace in a framed chase on the back. They are different machines. The masonry stack wants a crown, tuckpointing, a clay-tile scan and a look at the vent connectors. The chase wants a stainless cover with a cross-break, a check of the storm collar, an inspection of the refractory panels and a poly brush rather than a wire one. Homeowners often do not know they have both, and a contractor who prices one and finds the other on the day is a contractor who is about to change the number.

Short ranch stacks and the height rule

A chimney is expected to stand at least three feet above the point where it comes through the roof, and at least two feet higher than anything within ten feet of it horizontally — the roof ridge, a dormer, an addition. Ranch chimneys frequently fail the second half of that, especially where a later addition or a matured tree changed what is around them. The result is wind rolling over the ridge and pressing down the flue, which shows up as a fireplace that smokes on windy days, backdrafts at startup, or smells. Extending the flue, sometimes only by a course or two plus the right cap, is often the whole fix.

The three inspection levels, in plain English

NFPA 211 defines three levels, and the vocabulary matters because it is the difference between a flashlight through the damper and a real answer. Most of what a Cleveland homeowner needs is a Level 2.

Level 1

A visual check of readily accessible parts, appropriate when nothing about the system has changed and it is under continued service. It confirms the chimney is structurally sound, the appliance connection is correct, and the flue is clear of obstruction. It does not tell you the condition of the flue's interior surfaces.

Level 2

Everything in Level 1 plus a camera scan of the flue's full interior and access to accessible portions of the attic, crawl space and basement where the chimney passes through. The standard calls for Level 2 when a property is sold or transferred, when the appliance or the fuel changes, when a liner is added or altered, and after an operating malfunction or an external event that may have caused damage. This is what we quote by default, because it is the only level that answers the question people are actually asking.

Level 3

Adds removal of building or chimney components to reach a concealed area, and it is uncommon. A Level 3 happens when a Level 2 found something serious and the extent of it cannot be established any other way. Nobody should be quoting you a Level 3 up front.

What happens during the visit

From the roof

The top of the chimney is where the damage starts and where almost no homeowner has ever looked. We photograph the crown, the cap or its absence, the top courses of brick, the flue tile terminations and the flashing at the roofline. Half the findings on a typical Cleveland inspection come from this single vantage point, and most owners have never seen a picture of it.

The camera scan

A camera on a rod or a cable is run the full length of each flue, and the footage gets watched, not skimmed. What it resolves is joint condition: whether the mortar between clay tiles is intact, whether tiles have cracked, spalled, shifted or dropped, whether there is a gap where a section has failed, and whether anything is obstructing the passage. On a stack with several flues, each one is scanned separately, because they age independently.

The room side

Firebox brick and joints, refractory panels if the fireplace is factory-built, damper condition and operation, smoke chamber shape and surface, hearth extension, and the clearance between the chimney and combustible framing wherever it can be seen. If there is an appliance connected, the connection itself gets checked, because improvised adapters and unsupported connector pipe are common and dangerous findings.

Our fireplace smokes when it's windy but not otherwise. Why?

That pattern points at chimney height rather than the flue's condition. If the stack does not stand a clear two feet above everything within ten feet of it, wind coming over the ridge or a nearby addition presses down the flue and beats the draft. Adding height, and in some cases fitting a cap designed to handle wind, usually solves it. It is worth checking whether anything was built or grew nearby since the fireplace last worked properly.

We have a brick chimney and a metal one. Do they get serviced the same way?

No, and they should not be. A masonry stack and a factory-built system in a chase have different components, different inspection points, different brushes and different parts. The furnace flue has never been inspected. Is that a real risk?

It is the most under-inspected chimney in the average Cleveland house. Utility flues fail silently: acidic exhaust condensate eats clay tile and mortar from the inside, tile shards drop and restrict the passage, and the failure mode is carbon monoxide rather than a fire you would notice. If the furnace or water heater was replaced in the last decade and nobody evaluated the chimney, that is worth a scan on its own.

How long does an inspection take?

A single flue with reasonable roof access is usually under two hours including the walkthrough. Multiple flues, difficult roofs, or an appliance that has to be disconnected extend it. The camera footage takes as long as it takes; rushing that part is how findings get missed.
