A dryer vent is a flue. It moves hot, particle-laden air out of the house through a duct, and like a chimney it fails by accumulation. Lint packs the duct a little more with every load, airflow drops, drying times stretch, the dryer runs hotter to compensate, and eventually there is a duct full of the most flammable material in the house wrapped around a heating element. The U.S. Fire Administration puts clothes dryer fires in the thousands per year in residential buildings, with failure to clean as the leading identified factor. It is the same physics that makes us sweep chimneys, one floor down.
The runs that clog worst are the long ones, and Cleveland's housing stock produces a lot of them. A dryer in a basement or an interior laundry room pushing through thirty feet of duct and three or four elbows to reach an exterior wall is the local norm rather than the exception, and every elbow is a place where lint changes direction and drops out of the air stream.
Why duct length and elbows matter more than people think
There is an actual limit, and most people have never heard of it. Residential code puts the maximum developed length of a dryer exhaust duct at 35 feet, and requires that to be reduced by 5 feet for every 90-degree bend and 2.5 feet for every 45-degree bend. A basement dryer with four right-angle turns has spent 20 of its 35 feet on the corners alone. Plenty of installations in this market are over the limit, and an over-length run is not just a code issue: it means the dryer cannot clear its own moisture, so lint has more time to settle out and does so faster.
The other rule worth knowing is material. The duct itself should be smooth-wall rigid metal. Flexible foil and plastic accordion hose, which is what is behind an enormous number of dryers, has ridges that catch lint at every corrugation, crushes flat behind the appliance, and in the plastic versions is combustible in its own right. If we find one, we will tell you, because it is the single cheapest safety improvement available in most laundry rooms.
What the visit looks like
We measure airflow at the exterior termination before touching anything, so there is a number to compare against. The dryer is pulled out and disconnected, and the duct is cleaned along its full developed length with a rotary brush run from the appropriate end, with a vacuum capturing the debris rather than blowing it into the room. The transition hose behind the appliance is cleaned or condemned. The dryer's own lint trap housing and blower area get cleared, which is where a surprising amount of the accumulation actually lives.
Then we measure airflow again. That before-and-after number is the reason to do it this way: it turns the result from a claim into a measurement. Finally, the exterior termination gets checked — the flap should move freely, and it should not have a bird screen on it, because screens on a dryer termination mat over with lint and are one of the most common causes of a totally blocked vent.
What we tend to find
- Crushed foil transition hose behind the dryer, flattened by pushing the appliance back against the wall.
- A screened exterior termination matted solid with lint, which is a code and a safety problem rather than a maintenance one.
- A duct that has come apart at a joint inside a wall or a ceiling, quietly venting hot moist air into the cavity. This one causes mold and framing damage as well as poor drying.
- Screws through the duct at the joints, which are not permitted for exactly this reason: every protruding screw is a lint hook.
- A run that vents into a crawl space, an attic or a soffit rather than to the outdoors, which is more common than it should be.
- A bird nest in the termination, most often found in spring.
What drives the cost
- Length of the run and number of elbows.
- Accessibility of both ends, particularly if the termination is at height or on a steep roof.
- Whether the dryer is stacked, built in, or in a closet that limits access.
- How long it has been. A duct that has never been cleaned is a different job from an annual visit.
- Whether the transition hose or the termination needs replacing, which is a part rather than labor.
- Whether it is combined with a chimney visit, since the setup and travel are already covered.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
Once a year for a typical household, and sooner if drying times are already stretching. The variables that shorten that interval are run length, number of elbows, and how much laundry the house does — a family of five with a thirty-foot basement run is on a different schedule from a couple with a dryer on an exterior wall.
Can't I just clean the lint trap?
The trap catches most of the lint, and the rest goes into the duct and never comes back out on its own. The trap is maintenance you do every load. The duct is maintenance that needs rods, a rotary brush and a vacuum, and it is the part that actually accumulates.
Does a condensing or ventless dryer need this?
No duct, no duct cleaning — but ventless and heat-pump dryers have their own lint filters and condenser coils that clog, and drying performance falls off exactly the same way when they do. That is a manufacturer maintenance item rather than something we do, and we will tell you that rather than inventing a service.
Why book this with a chimney sweep?
It is the same discipline, clearing an accumulation-prone exhaust duct, and it means one visit covers both of the accumulation fire risks in the house. Most people add it after they have thought about what is actually behind the dryer, and combining it with a sweep is cheaper than two separate trips.
